„The best arguments in the world won’t change a person’s mind. The only thing that can do that is a good story.”
― Richard Powers, „The Overstory”
„You think your pain and your heartbreak are unprecedented in the history of the world, but then you read.”
— James Baldwin speaking to LIFE magazine in 1963
„A piece of writing has to start somewhere, go somewhere, and sit down when it gets there.”
― John McPhee, “Draft No. 4: On the Writing Process”
One day in 2008, I opened an agency in Paris because I have always loved books and The City of Lights. But because I am Polish, and proud to be so, it didn't take long for the agents and publishers that AJA represented in France to convince me to open an office in Warsaw. I left Poland in 1986 for political asylum in France and subsequently the UK. Back then Poland was still ravaged by a totalitarian, communist regime, preventing my return for many years. Opening an office in Warsaw in 2014 marked a return to my country and I felt a unique sense of joy when I saw the first books in Polish that had been handled by my Polish AJA. That experience filled the enormous vacuum created by years of living abroad and made me feel as a traveller feels when they return home. I couldn't be more thrilled today, after all these years, with AJA not only still up and thriving but heading into the future with an amazing team I am most proud of.
